Try some hand- made love at the new store at Bergamo Mall, featuring apparel, décor and jewellery.
FROM kurtis embellished with zardosi to shrugs made of crochet clusters, every product is handcrafted at Caravan’s first store in the city, at Bergamo Mall on Khader Nawaz Khan Road. An ethnic brand—like Good Earth and Anokhi—it showcases a fascinating range of talent from around the country, all within 850 square feet. Currently operating out of four cities—Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru and now Chennai—Caravan has been collaborating with 21 artistes, training them to upgrade their level of craftsmanship, and then buying their products, which range from apparels to leather bags.
“Caravan was founded in 2013 (in Bengaluru) with the intention of bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and the evolving needs of contemporary living,” says founder Kunal R Sachdev. With a new markets for local brands, “the young Indian population is becoming more and more proud of their culture and the unique fashion trends associated with it”, he adds.
Besides apparel, expect home decor, jewellery and gifting options. The jewellery with bidri—a technique that involves inlaying of silver into zinc alloys—and vegetable-tanned leather bags that are coloured organically, caught our attention. “Every state and every village has materials and craft that are unique to that place. For example, we get muslin fabric from Bengal and Mangalagiri from Guntur. These products are not exposed to the outside world. We travel to rural areas in search of such talent, and sometimes spend about eight-nine months on production development,” says Sanhita Kandpal, the Bengaluru-based chief designer.
Zardozi, aari and Kutchi, appliqué (katab) are some of the other prominent crafts featured.
